Dr. Thorbjorn “Toby” Loch-Wilkinson
Dr Thorbjorn (Toby) Loch-Wilkinson is an Australian trained neurosurgeon with subspecialty interest in spinal conditions and peripheral nerve conditions. He is also comprehensively trained in and undertakes surgery in a wide spectrum of cranial and brain conditions.
Dr Loch-Wilkinson’s practice is based in Brisbane. He has a private and public practice based at the Brisbane Private Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and Bay Medical Specialist Suites, Capalaba.
He is also a visiting specialist with admitting rights at Darwin Private Hospital and the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Training and Memberships
Originally from Sydney, Dr Loch-Wilkinson undertook undergraduate studies in Science with Honours through the University of Sydney with a major in chemistry. He was awarded a travelling scholarship to study chemistry at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He continued his studies in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney graduating with Honours. He was awarded the Mitchell Craig Prize in Surgery and was awarded the RSL travelling scholarship to visit several Papua New Guinea hospitals. Dr Loch-Wilkinson also worked previously as an artillery and medical corps officer in the Australian Army Reserve.
Dr Loch-Wilkinson undertook neurosurgical training in multiple centres of excellence in Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia and received his fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2016. He completed further subspecialty fellowship training in peripheral nerve surgery at the University of Calgary in Canada before undertaking a complex spine surgery fellowship in adults and paediatric spine surgery in Brisbane at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Mater Hospital and Lady Cilento Children’s hospital.
Dr Loch-Wilkinson is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. He has published multiple research articles in peer reviewed journals on spinal and peripheral nerve conditions.
Dr Loch-Wilkinson is trained in AMA 5, CIME(ABIME) and GEPI and provides a medico-legal services across most industries.
When not working, Dr Loch-Wilkinson enjoys spending time with his young family, in particular doing outdoor pursuits such as bushwalking, mountain biking and kayaking.
